Public comment period for proposed expansion at Ebbing Air National Guard Base

Fort Smith, ARLocal News

The Department of the Air Force is seeking public input on its proposed expansion of Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Fort Smith, which includes the addition of 12 F-35 aircraft and an increase of 596 personnel by 2029. This expansion would elevate the base's F-35 capacity from 24 to 36. The environmental impact study indicates that about 270 new homes will be necessary, along with more than 200 children expected to attend local schools. Austin Naranjo, a project manager for the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, stated that the increase in personnel is likely to boost the local economy. There are anticipated concerns about noise affecting approximately 6,500 residents and workers in the vicinity, but nighttime operations are projected to reduce by 26%.

The Air Force has indicated the need for additional F-35 capacity to meet new requirements following the signing of the 2024 FMS PTC EIS ROD. Public comments are due by September 24, which will be considered in the final supplemental environmental impact statement. This expansion reflects the growing demand for advanced military capabilities and the Air Force's commitment to engaging with the local community.
