Choctaw Nation and Fort Smith police cross-deputized, enabling enforcement on tribal land in Arkansas

Fort Smith, ARLocal News

The Fort Smith Police Department and Choctaw Nation Light Horse Police have formalized a cross-deputization agreement, allowing enforcement of laws on tribal land in Arkansas for the first time. This memorandum primarily impacts the Choctaw Casino area, where the casino is located in Oklahoma and the parking lot in Arkansas. Fort Smith Police Chief Danny Baker explained that while they won't patrol the parking lot, they can assist if called. Act 594, sponsored by State Senator Justin Boyd, facilitates this collaboration without granting new authority to either agency. Mayor George McGill praised the agreement for providing practical benefits, especially for the large number of Arkansas residents employed at the casino.

The law's implications vary for individuals based on tribal affiliation and location; different legal standards apply to tribal members compared to non-tribal individuals. Choctaw Nation Chief Gary Batton emphasized that enhanced cooperation will improve public safety in the River Valley. This agreement represents a significant step in addressing jurisdictional complexities on tribal lands.
