Fort Smith board splits decisions Trane gains support, as other issues stall in meeting

Fort Smith, ARLocal News

Trane Technologies plans to invest $5. 6 million in its Fort Smith plant, which will create at least 60 new jobs with an average wage of $25 per hour. The Fort Smith Board of Directors approved state tax incentives to support this expansion via the “Tax Back” program. In contrast, the board delayed a decision on acquiring four cemeteries, citing high initial costs of $961,550 and an increase in annual expenditures. Director Jarred Rego noted the complexities involved in managing the cemeteries and the need for a sustainable financial approach.

Ed Ralston, a member of the cemetery board, pointed out the ongoing struggles to maintain operations without guaranteed income. The board's contrasting decisions highlight Fort Smith's economic growth alongside significant community challenges. Trane's expansion underscores the city's role in advanced manufacturing, while cemetery management remains a contentious issue. Local leaders must now balance economic development with community service needs.
