Prosecutors say Van Buren officer tried to meet with 14-year-old girl for sex

Fort Smith, ARLocal News

Jason Matthew Scites, a 45-year-old officer from Van Buren, has been charged with internet stalking of a child after attempting to meet a 14-year-old girl for sex. Scites, who communicated with the girl on TikTok, was unaware that the account had been taken over by a police investigator. Following his arrest, his bond was set at $500,000, and he requested a public defender. The Van Buren Police Chief, Jonathan Wear, fired Scites immediately and sought to have his law enforcement certification revoked. The incident highlights serious issues regarding police accountability and the protection of minors online.

Scites' arrest occurred on a Monday, and he faces significant legal repercussions. This case may prompt discussions about the adequacy of current measures in safeguarding children from predatory behavior. Community members are likely to demand further investigations into police practices and child protection initiatives.
