Fort Smith to consider first phase of 100M sewer bond for consent decree projects
The Fort Smith Board of Directors will meet on July 22 to deliberate on a proposal to issue up to $100 million in sales and use tax bonds aimed at upgrading the city’s sewer system. This initiative seeks to address long-standing infrastructure issues in adherence to a federally mandated Consent Decree. If the board approves the resolution, the financing is expected to close by October 23, contingent on market conditions. The meeting will also address the submission of the city's "Energy & Environment Innovation Comprehensive Action Plan" to state authorities, emphasizing local climate initiatives. Furthermore, a proposal to establish new pay rates and procedures for city engineers will be considered, linking compensation to the city's long-term planning goals.
The board will also review a $1. 2 million resolution for engineering services under the 2025 Streets, Bridges, and Associated Drainage Sales Tax Program. Other agenda items include acquiring sewer utility easements and adopting formal grant policies for the city. These discussions highlight Fort Smith's ongoing commitment to infrastructure improvement and environmental stewardship.
