Thieves target SNAP benefits in Arkansas Here's how to protect your account

Fort Smith, ARLocal News

Thieves have stolen SNAP benefits from residents in Arkansas, prompting the Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS) to urge victims to contact law enforcement. Kate Jenkins with Arkansas Foodbank stated that stolen benefits cannot be replaced, highlighting the severity of the issue. To help prevent further theft, DHS has provided several tips, including resetting PINs monthly and using complex, unique numbers. They also advise recipients to keep their PINs confidential and regularly check their EBT accounts for unauthorized activity. Individuals in need of food assistance can reach out to local food banks, including the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank and the River Valley Regional Food Bank.

The DHS emphasizes that recipients should not share their PINs with anyone and should be cautious when using card reading machines. The rise in SNAP thefts underscores the importance of these protective measures for vulnerable populations. As the situation evolves, DHS continues to monitor and respond to these incidents to ensure the safety of SNAP benefits.
