Could roundabouts become more common than red lights?
Rogers and Bentonville are pushing to replace traffic signals with roundabouts, citing enhanced safety and efficiency. Bentonville Transportation engineer Cody Vaugn states, “They make a lot of sense,” reflecting a growing trend in traffic management. Historical data from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation shows that roundabouts can reduce severe crashes by 78-82 percent. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that converting 10% of signalized intersections in the U. S.
to roundabouts could prevent 50,000 crashes, including 290 fatalities. Residents express mixed feelings about proposed roundabouts, especially regarding potential property impacts. For instance, Kathy Cartwright acknowledges her adjustment to roundabouts but questions their long-term viability. Public comments on the proposed roundabout at the intersection of Highway 12 and Highway 279 in Bentonville will continue until July 11. Local officials anticipate increasing the number of roundabouts while replacing traditional traffic signals where feasible.
