St. Joseph Center, historic orphanage in N. Little Rock, to be demolished after devastating fire

Fort Smith, ARLocal News

The Diocese of Little Rock confirmed the impending demolition of the historic St. Joseph Center orphanage after a fire severely damaged the structure. Established in 1910, the center has a rich history, serving orphans and later functioning as a daycare and artist studios. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor revealed that restoration costs would exceed $20 million, not accounting for new operating expenses.

Salvage efforts spanned months, resulting in the removal of over 350,000 pounds of debris, but ultimately, the diocese found demolition to be the most sensible choice. The building's historical significance was recognized with its listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The group that utilized the St. Joseph Center will continue to operate on the property, even after the demolition. The decision underscores the challenges of preserving historic structures amidst rising restoration costs.

Local community members had hoped for a different outcome, reflecting the orphanage's importance in North Little Rock's history.
