Firework safety for July 4th 2025

Fort Smith, ARLocal News

Fireworks-related injuries reached alarming levels in 2024, with around 14,700 emergency room visits and 11 fatalities, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Nurse practitioner Gage Lankford stresses the importance of maintaining safety while handling fireworks, advising that they should be lit one at a time and that water should always be on hand for emergencies. He cautions against allowing young children to play with fireworks, as one in three accidents involves minors under 15. Additionally, the Red Cross recommends storing fireworks in a cool, dry place, away from children and pets. The loud sounds associated with fireworks can also frighten animals, prompting the American Veterinary Medical Association to suggest keeping pets indoors.

Lankford further advises quickly distancing oneself from any lit fireworks to avoid injuries. These safety measures are crucial in preventing accidents and ensuring a safe celebration during the Fourth of July festivities. As communities prepare for the holiday, awareness of these practices can significantly reduce the risk of harm.
