Reflecting on Memorial Day (by Nate Nehring)

Everett, WALocal News

Memorial Day honors the sacrifices of fallen soldiers, evolving from Decoration Day in the 1860s to its current form recognized by Congress in 1967. Communities traditionally gathered to decorate graves, fostering unity in remembrance of veterans. While many now celebrate with barbecues and parades, the holiday's core remains rooted in solemn ceremonies nationwide. In Snohomish County, a memorial along the Centennial Trail commemorates 18 local heroes who died in the Global War on Terror. The memorial features eighteen bronze doves, each representing a fallen veteran, and serves as a permanent tribute to their bravery.

This initiative involved local Gold Star families and community organizations, emphasizing the importance of remembering sacrifices daily. As Memorial Day approaches, it urges reflection on the freedoms defended by these courageous individuals. Communities are encouraged to honor their legacy and strive to uphold the values they fought to protect.
