City seeks volunteers for pro and con committees for potential property tax ballot measure
The City of Everett is gearing up for a significant ballot measure on property tax, slated for the August 6 primary election, as part of an initiative to combat a serious structural deficit. The city is seeking volunteers to join pro and con committees that will independently advocate for or against the measure. Interested residents have until April 25, 2024, to apply online for committee membership. Each committee will prepare a succinct statement for the Snohomish County Voter’s Pamphlet, with deadlines for final submissions by May 10 and rebuttals by May 14. The proposed tax increase, estimated to generate between $13 million and $20 million, could mean an additional cost of $20 to $35 per month for the average homeowner.
This funding aims to sustain essential services such as parks, police, fire services, and libraries. The city council's meeting on May 1 will confirm committee appointments, which will then be submitted to the Snohomish County Auditor by May 3. This proactive approach underscores the city’s commitment to preserving community services amid increasing financial pressures.
