What You Need to Know About Everetts New Automated Traffic Cameras

Everett, WALocal News

Everett will install automated traffic cameras in school zones and major intersections starting in April 2024, with the first month designated for warnings only. After this grace period, violators will face a $124 fine for speeding or running red lights. The cameras will capture images and video evidence of violations, helping to enhance safety in high-risk areas. Traffic Engineer Corey Hert noted that the program is intended to be revenue neutral, using any generated funds to improve local traffic safety through projects like enhanced crosswalks and lighting. Initial projections estimate 22,253 monthly violations, which could drop to approximately 2,000 after a year of operation.

This initiative aims to modify driver behavior, particularly among non-residents, who are expected to account for 80% of violations. The total cost of each camera ranges from $3,000 to $4,000, with the program designed to cover additional staffing needs for enforcement. Everett's approach reflects a commitment to reducing traffic incidents and enhancing pedestrian safety.
