Washington updates student discipline rules for public schools
Washington state will implement updated discipline guidelines for public school students on July 11, addressing escalating disruptive behavior in classrooms. Superintendent Chris Reykdal stated that the changes are necessary as students have faced increasing challenges post-pandemic. Critics, including the League of Education Voters Foundation, argue these updates may harm vulnerable populations, such as students of color and those with disabilities. Eric Holzapfel noted that the new rules could reverse progress made since 2019 in student discipline reforms. Specific concerns include the potential for increased classroom exclusions and a lack of alternative discipline options.
The updated rules stem from emergency regulations enacted last August to clarify previous policies. Under these rules, teachers can exclude students for a maximum of two days, but concerns remain regarding the support provided to those removed from class. Advocates continue to call for a more inclusive approach to student discipline that considers the needs of all students.
