Secure Your Load, Save a Life Washington campaign returns to prevent crashes and protect communities

Edmonds, WALocal News

Washington state launches the "Secure Your Load for Safer Roads" campaign to address the risks posed by unsecured vehicle loads, coinciding with National Secure Your Load Day on June 6. Unsecured loads were responsible for 337 crashes and 32 injuries last year, highlighting the need for increased awareness and safety measures. The Washington Department of Ecology and Washington State Patrol will distribute free cargo nets and ratchet straps at community events to encourage proper load securing. During the first three weekends in June, patrols will actively monitor for unsecured loads, having issued 532 citations in 2024 alone. Fines for failing to secure loads range from $50 to $5,000, with higher penalties for incidents resulting in injury or property damage.

Chief John R. Batiste of the Washington State Patrol emphasizes the importance of education and enforcement in preventing roadway tragedies. The campaign also collaborates with NAPA Auto Parts to offer discounts on tie-down equipment for pledging drivers. Overall, officials encourage making load securing a routine practice to enhance road safety.
