County Council Corner Reflecting on the importance of Memorial Day

Edmonds, WALocal News

Memorial Day, established in its current form by Congress in 1971, serves as a day of remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. The holiday has its roots in the post-Civil War era as Decoration Day, a time for communities to honor fallen soldiers. Though often marked by leisure activities, the true essence of Memorial Day is found in solemn ceremonies held nationwide. In Snohomish County, a permanent memorial along the Centennial Trail commemorates 18 local veterans who died in the Global War on Terror. Unveiled in 2022, the memorial features 18 bronze doves, each symbolizing a fallen hero.

Councilmember Nate Nehring highlights the collaboration with Gold Star families and local organizations to create this tribute. He calls for continued reflection on the sacrifices made by service members, emphasizing the need to live lives worthy of their legacy. This Memorial Day, the community is urged to honor and remember those who defended liberty and democracy.
