SUN Bucks program returns to provide summer food support for Washington children

Edmonds, WALocal News

The SUN Bucks program will provide financial support for food to approximately 620,000 Washington children this summer through a one-time payment of $120. The funds will be distributed starting the first week of June 2025, in collaboration with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. State officials, including Superintendent Chris Reykdal, stress that students learn better when their basic needs are met, particularly during the summer when food insecurity can rise. Parents can apply online for SUN Bucks if their children do not automatically qualify based on existing assistance programs like SNAP or TANF. The application process is available in English and Spanish and runs through August 29, 2025.

This initiative complements existing summer food programs, allowing families to access additional resources while receiving Summer EBT benefits. The SUN Bucks benefits are especially significant as grocery costs remain high in Washington, making access to nutritious food crucial for children's well-being. By prioritizing nutrition, the state aims to support the health of children and families during the summer months.
