Annual Discover Pass cost set to increase in October

Edmonds, WALocal News

Beginning October 1, 2025, the Discover Pass fee for Washington state parks will increase from $30 to $45, marking the first adjustment since its implementation in 2011. The Washington state Legislature approved this increase to address ongoing funding challenges, which have been exacerbated by a budget shortfall. Governor Bob Ferguson signed the bill into law on May 17, 2025, with the increase aimed at ensuring the continued operation and maintenance of state parks. Despite the fee hike, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission expects little significant new revenue in the upcoming 2025-27 biennium. Approximately 71% of the funding for State Parks will derive from earned revenue, up from 65% in the current period.

The bill also includes changes to off-road vehicle requirements and provisions for the Lifetime Disabled Veteran’s pass. The Discover Pass revenue serves as a core funding stream to keep state parks operational and staffed. Further updates regarding the fee changes will be communicated to customers throughout the summer and early fall.
