Memorial Day to kick off busy season for state ferries with added service

Edmonds, WALocal News

Washington State Ferries (WSF) announced an increase in service on three routes starting mid-June to accommodate the summer travel surge. The Seattle/Bremerton route will return to a two-boat schedule on June 15, while the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth “Triangle” route will operate three boats daily beginning June 30. Additionally, the Port Townsend/Coupeville route will have a second vessel every Friday through Monday from July 4 until October 13. WSF Deputy Secretary Steve Nevey emphasized the need for improved staffing but warned of potential cancellations due to crew shortages. Over the Memorial Day weekend, WSF anticipates more than 300,000 passengers across over 2,000 sailings.

The holiday rush starts May 22, coinciding with National Maritime Day, highlighting the importance of ferry services in the region. Travelers should download the WSDOT mobile app for sailing schedules and real-time updates. Heavy traffic is expected, particularly on westbound sailings from May 22-24 and eastbound from May 24-26, indicating travelers should plan accordingly.
