Students receive maritime education scholarships at Compass Courses Edmonds event

The Compass Courses Edmonds/Maritime Institute awarded $26,000 in scholarships to six Washington high school students on May 10, 2025. The scholarships, ranging from $3,000 to $6,000, were administered by the Youth Maritime Training Association (YMTA) and support students pursuing maritime careers. Among the recipients, two are part of the inaugural class at Seattle's Maritime High School, with career aspirations as marine deck officers, engineers, and biologists. The event featured sponsorship from organizations such as Foss Maritime and the Seattle Chapter of the Council of American Master Mariners. A panel of industry judges, including Captain Jim Herron and Roni Kittelson, evaluated the applicants.

Established in the late 1990s, the YMTA aims to enhance maritime training opportunities in the region. The Compass Courses Edmonds/Maritime Institute offers over 100 U. S. Coast Guard and Navy-approved courses across various locations. This scholarship initiative highlights the ongoing commitment to maritime education and workforce development in Washington state.
