School board approves performance-based pathway for graduation

Edmonds, WALocal News

The Edmonds School District Board approved a performance-based graduation pathway during its May 13 meeting, allowing students to create personalized learning contracts to meet graduation requirements in English Language Arts or mathematics. This initiative, modeled after the Washington State School Directors’ Association, aims to provide students with more flexible educational opportunities. Each student's work will be assessed locally by at least one relevantly endorsed teacher using state-developed proficiency targets. In addition to this significant decision, the board approved emergency waiver requests for students affected by power outages during the 2024-2025 school year. They also finalized a sale agreement for a 1,562-square-foot parcel of land, which had been mismanaged since a 1977 transaction.

The current owner is willing to pay fair market value and cover appraisal costs. The board's actions signal a proactive approach to educational and property management issues. This meeting highlighted the district's dedication to enhancing student opportunities and resource optimization.
