Council proposes changes to business license fee structure, continues budget scenarios discussion

Edmonds, WALocal News

The Edmonds City Council is considering changes to its business license fees, which have been flat since 2009, during a recent meeting. City Clerk Scott Passey outlined the current fee structure, which includes $125 for commercial licenses and $100 for home occupation licenses. The council aims to create a more equitable fee system that reflects practices in neighboring jurisdictions by incorporating factors like the number of employees and business type. Passey emphasized that transitioning to a variable-rate model could complicate enforcement, as the city relies on voluntary compliance. To implement changes effectively, the council must act before October to ensure new fees are in place by January 31, 2026.

The discussions are part of broader budget considerations and revenue generation strategies. Edmonds has processed over 4,000 license applications, generating approximately $250,000 in revenue. The council's decisions could significantly impact local business practices and compliance.
