Edmonds hosts first-ever Law Day event, engaging students in local government and justice

Edmonds, WALocal News

The City of Edmonds hosted its first Law Day on May 1, providing 75 Meadowdale Middle School students with an immersive civic education experience. Kicking off at the Municipal Court, the students participated in a mock trial, taking on various roles to understand the judicial process. They then shifted to a mock city council session, where they debated legislation on backyard dog breeding under the guidance of local officials. Court Administrator Uneek Maylor noted the students' serious engagement and insightful questions during the activities. The event featured hands-on learning stations, including a demonstration of police drone technology, which showcased its role in public safety.

Mayor Mike Rosen held an "Ask the Mayor" booth, allowing students to inquire about city operations. This initiative aimed to inspire civic participation and awareness among young residents. The success of this first Law Day suggests potential for future events to strengthen community engagement.
