Will Edmonds see more middle housing in the future? Heres what the Planning Board thinks

Edmonds, WALocal News

The Edmonds Planning Board moved closer to adopting zoning code updates that would facilitate middle housing by selecting six types under House Bill 1110, which mandates at least six of nine types to be permitted. The approved types are duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, stacked flats, courtyard apartments, and cottage housing. Community support was evident, as one resident noted 60 signatures backing the adoption of necessary development standards. The board is set to finalize its recommendation during the May 14 meeting and present it to the City Council on May 27. The city must adopt these zoning updates by July 1 to comply with state requirements.

Additionally, the board discussed updating parking regulations for accessory dwelling units to align with new state laws. These changes follow several housing bills passed by the state Legislature aimed at addressing housing shortages. Planning Board members expressed varying opinions on the necessity of Low-Density Residential – Walkable zones, ultimately deciding to exclude them from consideration for the time being.
