Edmonds School Board approves cuts of 12 full-time employees ahead of 2025-26 school year

Edmonds, WALocal News

The Edmonds School District Board approved a reduction of staff equivalent to 12 full-time employees to address an $8. 5 million budget deficit for the 2025-2026 school year. The board's resolution highlighted that anticipated financial resources are inadequate to support the district's programs. As required, the district must notify affected staff by May 15, and further cuts may impact middle school athletics and other support services. Superintendent Dr.

Rebecca Miner indicated that the actual number of job losses could fluctuate based on part-time positions. Historically, the district has successfully rehired many employees laid off in previous years, suggesting a potential for recovery. The board received a legislative update indicating that certain bills, if signed by the governor, could improve the district's financial outlook. Specifically, changes in special education funding could yield over $1. 85 million, while additional funding for materials and operating costs was less promising.

The district remains hopeful about HB 2048, which could increase levy collections by $6. 3 million.
