Letter to the editor Citizens Planning Board public hearing are you listening?

Edmonds, WALocal News

A public hearing on residential zoning changes in Edmonds drew significant resident turnout, with 18 speakers expressing concerns over the proposed code update. Kim Bayer-August, chair of the Architectural Design Board, led the discussion, supported by former Planning Board and Housing Commission members. Residents argued that the city's staff has exceeded state requirements and disregarded the Director’s instructions for simpler, less controversial regulations. Key issues raised included fears of overdevelopment, increased traffic congestion, and loss of green spaces, with residents cautioning against making Edmonds a "developer’s dream. " Many attendees insisted that the city should prioritize existing community needs over developer interests and maintain tree canopies and open spaces.

The EMC 2024 Community Survey highlighted overdevelopment as a significant concern among residents. The upcoming Planning Board meetings are deemed critical for shaping the future of Edmonds, as related decisions are expected to impact the city for generations. Advocates called for the use of 3D maps to visualize the potential impacts of the proposals.
