MTHS journalism students earn top honors in national student competition
Nearly 3,900 students and educators gathered in Seattle for a national journalism conference, where MTHS students showcased their skills and earned numerous awards. David Cardwell was recognized with a Superior rating in Sports Action Photography, while several others, including Charli Gilchrist and Efrata Solomon, received Excellent ratings in various categories. The print Hawkeye newspaper secured sixth place in the NSPA Best of Show contest among schools with fewer than 1,800 students. Two MTHS students also placed in on-site NSPA Best of Show individual competitions, demonstrating their talent on a national stage. For the 12th consecutive year, MTHS received the First Amendment Press Freedom Award, reflecting the community's dedication to free student media.
Journalism instructor Vince DeMiero emphasized the significance of this recognition for both the students and the community. This event not only highlights student achievements but also underscores the importance of supporting journalism education. The recognition of MTHS students contributes to a culture of excellence in journalism among young professionals.
