Edmonds School Board to vote April 29 on staff cuts amid 8.5M budget shortfall

Edmonds, WALocal News

The Edmonds School District anticipates an $8. 5 million budget deficit for the 2025-26 school year, leading to a crucial board vote on April 29 regarding staff cuts. The district may eliminate 12 positions in an effort to bridge the financial gap, with programs like middle school athletics and high school substance abuse prevention at risk. Over the past two years, the district has enacted cuts totaling more than $25 million, primarily affecting staff and extracurricular activities. Since April 2024, approximately $10 million in reductions have occurred, notably impacting administrative staff and support services like custodial work.

The board will also vote on a completed public works contract for HVAC upgrades at Mountlake Terrace High School, which took place from July to August 2024. In addition, the board will receive a financial report for February and an update on state legislative matters. The meeting is scheduled to start at 6:30 p. m. at the district’s Educational Service Center and will be livestreamed online.

The district is actively seeking solutions to balance its budget ahead of the upcoming school year.
