Democrats in Washington Legislature wrap up budget negotiations

Washington state Democratic lawmakers have wrapped up negotiations on a new two-year operating budget, with an expected release of the proposal by Saturday morning. Senator June Robinson, chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, emphasized that while all decisions are made, details will follow. Rep. Steve Tharinger reported that the capital budget language is being finalized, signaling progress on that front as well. Despite this progress, both lawmakers warned that the budget remains tight, necessitating potential adjustments based on upcoming revenue bills.

These bills, House Bill 2081 and Senate Bill 5814, are projected to raise several billion dollars for the budget starting July 1. Senate Minority Leader John Braun cautioned that any changes to these revenue measures could disrupt the budget process. The last day of the legislative session is Sunday, adding urgency to finalize the budget. This development is crucial for funding state services and programs over the next two years.
