Bill removing drivers license requirement for employment signed into law

Edmonds, WALocal News

Washington's Senate Bill 5501, sponsored by Sen. Derek Stanford, bans the requirement of a driver's license for employment unless driving is a core task. Stanford stated that it is unreasonable to exclude capable candidates from jobs that do not involve driving. The bill is particularly significant for individuals with disabilities, who face substantial barriers to employment. Anna Zivarts, of the Disability Mobility Initiative, noted that many employers still list driver’s licenses as a requirement, even for non-driving positions.

According to U. S. Census data, over 12% of Washington residents live with a disability, and a quarter of driving-age adults lack a driver's license. These non-licensed individuals tend to be younger or from communities of color. The legislation places Washington alongside Oregon and California in fostering inclusive hiring practices.

SB 5501 will take effect on July 27, 2025, aiming to enhance employment opportunities for many.
