Council OKs interim tree-cutting ban, withdraws amendments on city property sales
The Edmonds City Council passed an interim ordinance banning the removal of large trees on private property, addressing community concerns about the historic Big Red tree. Additionally, the council withdrew amendments related to the potential sale of city properties, including parks and community centers, which residents believe should remain public assets. About 150 people attended the council meeting, with nearly 50 providing public testimony on these topics. Residents from the Medical District Expansion voiced opposition to zoning changes that could increase density and traffic in their neighborhood. They circulated a petition signed by 79 residents against the council-approved growth strategy.
The North Bowl neighborhood also raised concerns about the impact of zoning changes on their quality of life. In response, councilmembers prioritized further evaluation of the North Bowl Hub and the establishment of a critical areas program for the 2025 Comprehensive Plan amendments. The Comprehensive Plan, updated in December 2024, guides city decisions over a 20-year period.
