Edmonds School Board reviews staff reductions for 2025-2026 school year

The Edmonds School Board reviewed staffing reductions for the 2025-2026 school year during an April 15 meeting, with Superintendent Rebecca Miner proposing a maximum of 12 certificated teacher cuts. Miner emphasized that the resolution is designed to align staffing with class enrollment without increasing class sizes or changing staffing ratios. Using a hypothetical scenario, she illustrated how a significant drop in class enrollment could lead to necessary layoffs for teachers certified in specific subjects. School Board Director Thom Garrard expressed empathy for affected educators, acknowledging the difficulty of such decisions on their careers. The meeting served as a review, with no immediate action taken, as the district is required to submit a resolution by May 15 as per the teachers’ union agreement.

In a separate matter, the board also agreed to redirect up to $190,000 from lease earnings to the general fund to cover operational costs related to school facilities. President Nancy Katims noted the importance of every dollar, even in light of the district's ongoing financial challenges. The next school board meeting is scheduled for April 29.
