Edmonds School District considers staff cuts amid projected 8.5M deficit
The Edmonds School District is grappling with a projected $8. 5 million budget deficit for the 2025-26 school year, leading to discussions about potential staff cuts at the board meeting on April 15. This financial strain has prompted local education leaders, including Superintendent Dr. Rebecca Miner, to criticize state legislators for failing to meet their constitutional obligations regarding education funding. During a recent interview, Edmonds Education Association President Andi Nofziger emphasized the need to utilize district savings rather than impose further cuts, stating, "Savings are for rainy days, and it’s pouring now.
" A survey conducted by the district revealed that a majority of over 1,100 participants preferred reducing support staff and school programs to balance the budget. The district is also exploring increases in tuition for out-of-district students in various programs to bolster revenue. A first reading of the budget will take place on June 24, followed by a vote on staff cuts scheduled for April 29. As the state legislative session approaches its end on April 27, the district is hopeful for additional funding to alleviate its financial woes. The outcome of these discussions will significantly impact the educational landscape in Edmonds.
