Both sides of RFA debate explored in community conversation

Edmonds, WALocal News

On April 8, 2025, Edmonds’ Asian Service Center hosted a community discussion on the contentious proposal for the city to annex to the South Snohomish County Regional Fire and Rescue Authority (RFA). Approximately 60 residents attended the event, which was moderated by Teresa Wippel, CEO of the My Neighborhood News Network. Proponents of the annexation, represented by Adam Cornell, highlighted the benefits of joining the RFA, including a more sustainable funding model through property taxes. Meanwhile, Jim Ogonowski, representing the opposition group Edmonds Can Do Better, raised concerns about the motivations behind the timing of the contract cancellation with South County Fire. The special election on April 22 will determine the future of fire and emergency services for Edmonds, with ballots already being mailed to voters.

Wippel provided context on the community's journey toward this decision, referencing the successful annexations by neighboring cities. The discussion allowed for a respectful exchange of ideas, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making for the community's safety. With the stakes high, residents are encouraged to educate themselves on the implications of the annexation.
