Removal of Big Red scheduled to start March 31
The imminent removal of Big Red, a 100-foot coast redwood tree at the Boardwalk Condominiums in Edmonds, has sparked controversy among residents. Scheduled for removal starting March 31, the decision follows a permit issued by the city, which advocates like Dennis Weaver contest as based on misleading information regarding the tree’s structural impact. The Boardwalk Homeowners Association argues that the roots are damaging the parking area, leading to the permit's approval on December 9. Weaver's legal challenge, filed in Snohomish County Superior Court, aimed to highlight inconsistencies in the assessment but was dismissed on procedural grounds. Nevertheless, Weaver continues to fight for the tree, mobilizing community support through posters and letters.
He believes the permit incorrectly identifies Big Red as a giant sequoia, which is a significant error in the context of the removal. Weaver has made a public appeal to the mayor to rescind the permit, emphasizing the need for accurate information in such decisions. As the scheduled removal date draws near, the community remains divided, with advocates hoping to save this iconic tree.
