Michelle Bennett has been appointed as the Acting Chief of Police for Edmonds, Washington, effective March 18, 2021, following the resignation of Acting Chief Jim Lawless. Mayor Mike Nelson highlighted Bennett's extensive experience and qualifications, which include a tenure at the King County Sheriff’s Office from 1990 to 2021 and leadership positions in Maple Valley and Sammamish. With a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Justice, a Master’s in Psychology, and a Doctorate in Education, Bennett brings a wealth of knowledge to the role. She has also taught criminal justice courses at local colleges since 1998, showcasing her commitment to education in law enforcement. During her time as Acting Chief, Bennett will ensure stability as the city begins the recruitment process for a permanent chief, which can take up to six months.

Although she is a fully commissioned officer, her new role will be as a noncommissioned chief administrative officer, allowing her to exercise most chief responsibilities without arresting authority. Mayor Nelson expressed excitement over Bennett’s appointment, emphasizing her insights and experience as vital assets for the Edmonds Police Department. This leadership change marks an important moment for the city's law enforcement, aiming to maintain public safety and community trust during the transition.
