Janis Howes Wins 2022 Bird Fest Poster Art Contest

Artist Janis Howes has triumphed in the 2022 Puget Sound Bird Fest Poster Art Contest with her stunning watercolor painting, "Trumpeter Swans of Skagit Valley Farmlands. " Chosen from 17 entries, Howes' artwork will be showcased on the promotional materials for the festival, set for September 10-11, 2022, in Edmonds, Washington. The contest is organized by the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation, which rewards the winning artist with a $350 prize. Howes’ inspiration stems from her visits to the picturesque Skagit Valley, known for its wintering swans and geese. The jury praised her piece for its exceptional sense of place and movement, highlighting its evocative storytelling qualities.

Tanya Sharp, a jury member from the Edmonds Arts Commission, noted the painting's successful portrayal of landscapes. This year’s festival includes a keynote presentation by esteemed swan biologist Martha Jordan, focusing on the relationship between swans, land use, and agriculture. The Puget Sound Bird Fest aims to engage the community in celebrating birds and nature through various activities, many of which are free.
