Announcing 2023 Edmonds Climate Action Plan

Edmonds, WALocal News

The City of Edmonds has announced its 2023 Climate Action Plan (CAP), emphasizing the increasing urgency of addressing climate change-related risks such as heat stress and flooding. Despite the city's long-standing efforts, carbon emissions have not decreased since 2010, necessitating bold and innovative actions. The CAP aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 and seeks to enhance the overall quality of life while rectifying environmental injustices faced by frontline communities. These communities are particularly vulnerable due to factors like inadequate tree canopy and proximity to flood zones. The plan's development involved community input and scientific research, ensuring that proposed actions align with local strengths and capabilities.

Performance metrics will be established to monitor progress, focusing on tangible outcomes like solar installations and public transit usage. Residents are encouraged to engage with the plan and participate in a Climate Champions Series this spring. An executive summary and the full plan will be accessible on the city’s website, with a public hearing scheduled for the February 28, 2023 City Council meeting.
