WA governor says he will limit his own emergency powers if lawmakers dont

Edmonds, WALocal News

In a significant move to balance governmental powers, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has committed to limiting his own emergency powers unless the Legislature enacts bipartisan legislation. He stated that any emergency declaration lasting more than 60 days while the Legislature is out of session would be terminated upon receiving written requests from three of four legislative leaders. Additionally, if an emergency extends beyond 120 days, Ferguson will call a special session to allow lawmakers to address it. This decision comes after Republican criticism of former Governor Jay Inslee’s handling of emergency powers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposal, Senate Bill 5434, faced hurdles in the Senate, with a Democratic senator citing Ferguson’s lack of engagement in discussions as a contributing factor.

Despite the bill's challenges, Ferguson’s proactive stance demonstrates a willingness to address concerns about unchecked executive authority. Senator Keith Wagoner, the bill's sponsor, praised Ferguson's actions but emphasized the necessity for formal legislation to codify these provisions. Ultimately, Ferguson's approach seeks to foster better governance and enhance accountability during times of crisis.
