School board recognizes Edmonds-Woodway student athletes for making history twice
The Edmonds School Board of Directors recognized significant achievements by Edmonds-Woodway High School student-athletes during the Winter Sports recognition event on March 11. The boys basketball team, with a formidable defense, finished the season with a 26-3 record and secured the second position in the state, marking the highest ranking in the school's basketball history. Athletic Director Angie McGuire praised the team's performance, noting their ability to control critical game spaces. Additionally, wrestler Hannah Baldock made history by becoming the first girl from the school to win a state championship and reach a remarkable milestone of 100 career wins alongside 72 career pins. The board also approved new policies for naming district facilities, emphasizing geographic relevance, and allocated funds for playground equipment upgrades at Hazelwood Elementary.
Public comments highlighted the need for curriculum changes to educate students about the historical impacts of boarding schools on Indigenous peoples. The next school board meeting is scheduled for March 25, providing an opportunity for further community engagement. This event underscores the commitment of the Edmonds School District to celebrate achievements and address pressing educational issues.
