Council hears plan for engaging community in centers, hubs and middle housing concepts

Edmonds, WALocal News

The Edmonds City Council is prioritizing community engagement in the development of "neighborhood centers and hubs" and "middle housing" as part of a comprehensive update to the city's development code. This initiative follows the recent adoption of the 2024 Comprehensive Plan, which includes four designated neighborhood centers and five hubs aimed at accommodating local growth targets. A virtual open house and a series of "Walk & Talk" events are scheduled to facilitate discussions with residents about these significant developments. Concerns have been raised by North Bowl residents about potential negative impacts on their community, emphasizing the importance of public input in the planning process. The city's planning staff is collaborating with the planning board to ensure that the new regulations meet state housing requirements while considering community feedback.

The interim code update is projected for completion by the end of June, with recommendations expected from the planning board in May. This proactive approach seeks to balance growth with the preservation of neighborhood character, making the engagement process vital for achieving community support and alignment with housing goals. As the city moves forward, resident participation will be essential in shaping outcomes that reflect local needs.
