Edmonds School District wrestlers compete at Mat Classic

Edmonds, WALocal News

At the Mat Classic in Tacoma, wrestlers from the Edmonds School District showcased their skills in Washington state's high school wrestling tournament, which was held over three days for the first time due to the sport's growing popularity. The event's new format included a significant change in the girls' division, where girls no longer competed in a combined 3A/4A category. Edmonds Woodway had three athletes, including Ever Yamada and Hannah Baldock, who advanced to the next rounds, guaranteeing them a placement in the tournament. Several other wrestlers from Lynnwood, Meadowdale, and Mountlake Terrace were also in the consolation bracket, striving for top positions. In the boys' competition, Edmonds Woodway achieved a commendable 5th place, while the girls' team finished 21st overall.

The tournament's structure changes and the performances of local athletes reflect the increasing significance of wrestling within the Edmonds community. This year's event not only celebrated individual achievements but also highlighted the collective effort of the schools involved. As wrestling continues to gain traction in Washington, the Mat Classic serves as a pivotal platform for showcasing local talent.
