On March 18, 2021, Michelle Bennett will take on the role of Acting Chief of Police for Edmonds, WA, following the resignation of Acting Chief Jim Lawless. With a career spanning over three decades, Bennett has held significant positions, including Chief of Police in both Maple Valley and Sammamish. She possesses a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Justice, a Master’s in Psychology, and a Doctorate in Education, showcasing her educational background. Moreover, Bennett has contributed to the academic field by teaching criminal justice courses at Washington State colleges since 1998.

While she is a fully commissioned officer, her new role will be as a noncommissioned chief administrative officer, granting her the authority of the Chief of Police, though without arresting power. The city anticipates that her leadership will be crucial as they embark on the recruitment process for a permanent police chief. This appointment reflects a commitment to maintaining effective law enforcement during a pivotal time for the Edmonds Police Department.
