Tsunami Siren Drill Thursday, Oct. 21st

Edmonds, WALocal News

On Thursday, October 21st, Edmonds, WA, will conduct a tsunami siren drill from 11 am to 1 pm, lasting approximately 15 minutes. This drill is an essential part of the annual testing of the tsunami alert system, which coincides with the Great Washington ShakeOut, an international initiative focused on earthquake preparedness. During the drill, participants will hear the actual tsunami warning sound followed by a bilingual audio message instructing them to evacuate to higher ground, emphasizing that this is merely a test. The new All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) siren system, installed in June 2021, enhances community safety and preparedness. In addition to this drill, the siren system undergoes regular testing on the first Monday of each month at noon, where it plays the Westminster Chimes and provides safety messages.

Residents can also listen to a recording of the tsunami siren through a provided link. Engaging with initiatives like the Great Washington ShakeOut not only promotes individual preparedness but also fosters community resilience. For more information about how to participate and prepare for emergencies, locals are encouraged to visit the Great Washington ShakeOut website.
