Snohomish County hosts World AIDS Day event Dec. 1

Snohomish County will host a World AIDS Day event on December 1 to raise awareness and honor those affected by HIV/AIDS. The event begins at 4:30 p. m. at the Snohomish County Health Department, featuring refreshments, displays, and activities. Health Officer Dr.

James Lewis and Health Department Director Kim Van Pelt will speak at 5:15 p. m. , followed by a walk to the restored AIDS Memorial. The memorial, dedicated 20 years ago, serves as a poignant reminder of the community's commitment to education and prevention. This year’s event emphasizes the advancements that have transformed HIV into a manageable condition.

Statistics show over 40 million people have died from AIDS-related causes, with 39 million currently living with HIV. Carrie Parker of the Health Department stated that the community honors the past and looks forward to eliminating HIV-related stigma. The event is co-sponsored by local organizations including Everett Pride and AIDS Project Snohomish County.
