Bring your own Fee increase on store-bought bags in WA state effective Jan. 1

Edmonds, WALocal News

Starting January 1, 2026, Washington state will increase the minimum charge for plastic film carryout bags to 12 cents, a move designed to encourage shoppers to use reusable bags. The charge will rise from the current eight cents, while the price for paper bags will remain unchanged at eight cents. This increase is part of a broader effort initiated by a 2020 law to reduce single-use plastic waste and promote sustainable practices. Since 2021, Washington has enforced a ban on thin, disposable plastic bags, requiring that all carryout bags contain at least 40% recycled material. Peter Lyon, manager of Ecology's Solid Waste Management Program, stated that using reusable bags is an effective way to mitigate environmental impacts associated with bag production and disposal.

To avoid bag charges, Ecology recommends that consumers keep reusable bags readily accessible. Businesses can access resources to remind customers to bring their own bags, including printable signs. Customers utilizing food benefits are exempt from bag fees, ensuring equitable access to essential goods.
