WAs new Resident Portal promises easier access to state services

Edmonds, WAGovernment

Washington state plans to launch its new Resident Portal in early 2026, aiming to simplify access to services from over 140 agencies. This initiative seeks to enhance user experience by making government services more efficient and secure, similar to private sector platforms. Chief Technology Officer Gretchen Peri described the project as an “exercise in efficiency and effectiveness,” while Chief Privacy Officer Katy Ruckle emphasized the critical need for public trust regarding data privacy. The portal's development follows a successful pilot that tested AI chatbots and tailored service recommendations for various state services. Officials intend to gradually expand features and participating agencies through 2029, continuing a digital government effort that began with Access Washington in 1998.

The initiative aligns with an executive order from Governor Bob Ferguson aimed at improving service delivery to residents. Ruckle noted that maintaining public trust involves responsible AI use and clear human oversight. The project reflects a broader trend of integrating technology to enhance government operations while safeguarding citizen data.
