Economic Development Commissioners share their work on paid parking, BO tax

Edmonds, WALocal News

The Edmonds City Council Committee met to discuss potential revenue generation strategies, including a temporary utility tax, paid parking, and a City business and occupation tax. Councilmembers agreed to draft an ordinance for a short-term utility tax, leaving the percentage undecided until cash flow projections are available. The Economic Development Commission shared insights on paid parking, emphasizing its potential to double revenue and improve parking turnover. Pros of paid parking include better access and sustainability, while cons include community resistance and enforcement challenges. Mobile app-based parking systems were recommended for their data-gathering capabilities.

The Commission's study, conducted over three months, has limitations, necessitating further analysis. Community feedback will also be sought to gauge sentiment on these proposals. Coordination with the Port of Edmonds on their parking study is also planned.
