Teacher leads fundraising effort to help families affected by cut in SNAP benefits
Emily Mahoney, a teacher at College Place Elementary in Lynnwood, spearheaded a fundraising drive that collected $3,600 for gas and grocery gift cards to support families impacted by the loss of SNAP benefits amid the U. S. government shutdown. Concerned about the potential food insecurity for many families, she collaborated with the school’s social committee and principal to devise an effective plan for assistance. The fundraising campaign began a week ago, primarily soliciting donations from staff, friends, and family, with most contributions being under $100.
Mahoney noted, “It really shows the power of community and that most people want to help others,” reflecting the strong local support for the initiative. This effort highlights the importance of community engagement in addressing food insecurity during governmental disruptions. With many families relying on SNAP benefits, the fundraising drive not only meets immediate needs but also reinforces community ties. The support from educators and local residents demonstrates a collective commitment to helping those in need. Initiatives like this can inspire similar actions in other communities facing similar challenges.
