Safe parking program strives to make no one feel less than
The Edmonds Unitarian Universalist Congregation's Car Camp Safe Parking Program is nearing its 10-year milestone, having served approximately 350 unhoused individuals since December 2015. The program offers ten parking spaces for people living in their vehicles, a response to the increasing demand driven by escalating housing costs. Grant Gladow, who oversees the initiative, emphasized that many guests find it difficult to transition to permanent housing. According to the county's latest Point-in-Time Count, 206 individuals were unsheltered and residing in vehicles in 2024. The program caters specifically to families with children and women, providing essential services such as water, waste disposal, and interaction with volunteers.
Guests can stay up to 90 days with potential extensions based on availability. The Hazel Miller Foundation recently awarded a grant of $9,990 to assist with gas and laundry vouchers for guests actively seeking employment. EUUC aims to expand its support services, reflecting its commitment to social justice and the dignity of every individual.
