Edmonds American Legion, VFW Posts hold flag retirement ceremony
Edmonds American Legion Post 66 and VFW Post 8870 recently held a ceremony to retire 110 worn American flags at Beck’s Funeral Home in Mountlake Terrace. The ceremony included traditional flag folding, a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, and a prayer before the flags were cremated. American Legion Post Commander Dan Mullene emphasized the importance of Beck's support for veteran organizations. The United States Flag Code mandates that worn flags be retired in a dignified manner, which usually involves burning. Each of the 13 folds of the flag carries symbolic meanings, honoring the nation's history and the sacrifices of veterans.
The final triangular shape, reminiscent of a cocked hat, pays tribute to those who fought for freedom. Flags collected for disposal were donated by community members, with a drop-off bin located at the Old Edmonds Opera House. Both veteran posts conduct their monthly meetings at this center, fostering community engagement.
